The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is a global initiative with various stakeholders involved in palm products. The main objective of the roundtable is to promote the growth and use of sustainable palm oil through supply chain cooperation and an open dialogue between stakeholders.
The RSPO palm oil supply chain certification standard ensures that the product comes from a well-managed source and that its supply chain is secure, and recordable and provides credible evidence of its sustainability.
Palm oil production has skyrocketed over the past 20 years. This increase in production has been accompanied by a growing concern about the sustainability of oil palm cultivation and the effects of palm oil production on local populations. In response to these concerns, a group of leading actors and NGOs formed the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil), a non-profit association, established in 2004, which brings together stakeholders in the oil palm industry, and whose objective is to promote the use of sustainable palm oil.
The Sustainable Palm Oil Roundtable is based on eight principles: commitment to transparency, compliance with applicable legislation, commitment to economic viability, use of the best possible practices for cultivation, environmental responsibility, social responsibility, responsible development of new plantations, and commitment to continuous improvement.
