The scarlet team was honored for a history that includes its 18th championship and another back-to-back title in Dominican baseball.
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – 105 years after its founding, the Leones del Escogido continue to write a history marked by championships, memorable figures, and a sustained presence in Dominican professional baseball.
This history was recognized in the most recent edition of Best of DR 2026 by Mercado Magazine, which honored the scarlet franchise for its 105-year history.
The award was received by Fernando Armenteros, executive vice president and treasurer of the Leones del Escogido Board of Directors, on behalf of the Board of Directors, and vice president of Treasury for Grupo SID.
The distinction comes after a season in which Escogido once again etched its name in the recent history of Dominican baseball. In January 2026, they captured their 18th Dominican Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) title, defeating the Toros del Este 4-1 in the Final Series.
The championship was clinched in the fifth game at Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium, with a 1-0 victory in a pitching duel that kept the score close until the final out.
With this win, the Leones also secured back-to-back championships, following their titles from the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons. The franchise thus achieved consecutive championships, a feat they hadn’t accomplished since the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons.
For over a century, the Leones have navigated various eras of Dominican baseball and have forged an identity linked to generations of players, managers, and fans who have supported the team both on and off the field.
The Best of DR award comes in a year that marks two milestones for the franchise: 105 years of history and a championship that raised their collection of national titles to 18. This combination connects the Lions’ past with a new chapter in their competitive history.
